Two medical breakthroughs play an important role in Dr. Tilley's work involving periodontal disease. One is a medicine injected into the gums to target infections; the other is an oral medication that limits the ability of bacteria to adhere to the teeth. "We've always known that localized infections, such as in the gums, were likely to contribute to other health problems, but there wasn't good scientific evidence of this," said Dr. Tilley. "Now, however, new research has given us conclusive evidence that periodontal disease can be particularly damaging to the heart."
